PRASAD COMES TO AID OF
TSUNAMI VICTIMS

In the aftermath of the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck Southeast Asia, PRASAD has received thousands of financial contributions that are earmarked for relief efforts. We thank all the donors and well-wishers who are already making an impact on people’s lives through the work of PRASAD in India and Sri Lanka.

In addition to fulfilling the immediate needs of the many people affected by the tragedy, PRASAD is supporting efforts to rebuild those communities along the coast of Tamil Nadu, India, where the destruction was intense.

“About 80% of the people along the coast earn their living from fishing,” said Kishore Shahani, a volunteer for Prasad Chikitsa (the PRASAD organization in India) who lives in that area. “When the twenty-foot wall of water came in, their boats were thrown hundreds of meters from the beach, and badly damaged or completely destroyed”. The following letter is from Dr. Ranjit, PRASAD Relief worker, to The PRASAD Project. In the letter, Dr. Ranjit speaks about Kovalam, one of the villages that is the focus of PRASAD’s Tsunami Relief efforts.
Dear Friends,

Let me introduce myself. I am Dr. Ranjit from Chennai, a family practice physician who is also involved in community health work. After the tsunami struck, I, along with my regular professional commitments, have also taken up rehabilitation of the affected communities – an activity that The PRASAD Project has been so gracious to support.

The second day after the tsunami attack, I began my work, having escaped death by a providential 45 minutes. I was one of a group of physicians who had been invited to attend a special seminar on diabetes held in a beachside resort 40 kilometers south of Chennai.

In the 36 hours that followed the disaster, the magnitude of the havoc caused to property and lives became reasonably clear. It was then I set out to investigate and delineate the role that I would play in the relief and rehabilitation process that lay ahead of us all – from every corner of the world. Read More
