HIV: India's Silent Killer

Harish (name changed) is HIV positive. He is eleven years old and was born with the illness. His elder sister Jayshree who is only fourteen, is not infected with HIV. Their parents passed away with AIDS and they are now orphaned. Their uncle is reluctant to take care of them, leaving them in a difficult situation. We visited them, and found Harish to be bright, beautiful and a pleasure to be around. He ran in to put on his best shirt for the visit. Read More

PRASAD's Self Help Groups
PRASAD self help groups in progress
At the levels of poverty people live in the Tansa Valley in Maharashtra, India, money can lead to a number of issues, from prostitution to borrowing for daily needs at disproportionate levels of interest. This creates opportunities for moneylenders and other middlemen to step in and manipulate the lives of the "adivasis" (local tribal people). This has led to bonded labor practices and exploitation, creating a circle of dependence and a loss of freedom. Recognizing this situation PRASAD has created over 50 self help groups in the villages around the Tansa Valley, based on the micro credit system.

Dear PRASAD Friend,

I have just returned from India and it's been a wonderful experience visiting PRASAD Chikitsa and its programs after a while. The work is magnificent and it is a tribute to our staff and volunteers on the ground, who work day after day to ensure that the PRASAD mission is being fulfilled and people’s lives are positively influenced. Nevertheless the task to uplift the Tansa Valley (Maharashtra, India) is large and will need focus and determination over many years, to achieve our goals.

The visit included some of the most remote villages and it was heart wrenching to see the difficult and tough life that people had around the catchment area in the Tansa Valley (Maharashtra, India) and in the villages near Chennai city (Tamil Nadu, India) where PRASAD is active with Tsunami relief work. The scorching heat, unrelenting poverty, a mix of disease, malnutrition and social challenges, reminds us of the many blessings we are fortunate to have in our lives.

Wherever the visit took us - whether the HIV program, the GSP Netra Chikitsa Hospital and Clinic, the Self Help Groups, the Tsunami Rehabilitation Work in Tamil Nadu or the Milk Programs in the schools, the villagers were always happy to see PRASAD volunteers and staff. And it was always for one single reason - the staff and volunteers truly cared for the villagers and offered their service in the same spirit.

In this newsletter you can find a few highlights from this visit. Our hope is to inspire you to see how you could contribute to this work. You can make a direct difference in the lives of thousands of people by giving a donation or volunteering your service in various ways (Donations: Click Here | Volunteer: Click here).

Sincerely,

Dennis Taraporewala
Director of Global Communications
