"Celebrate
Volunteers - The Spirit of America!" is the theme for the
30th annual National Volunteer Week, April 27 through May 3,
2003. The purpose of this week is to recognize and celebrate
the efforts of volunteers at the local, state and national levels.
The PRASAD Project thrives on the spirit of volunteerism throughout
the year. There are a number of ways to volunteer with The PRASAD
Project, especially with two big upcoming events: Beyond
Fashion in June, and PRASAD's Tour
de Smile, beginning on
July 11.

The
prevention program of the PRASAD Children's Dental Health
Program (CDHP) in New York collaborated with the School of
Nursing at Sullivan County Community College for a second
year. Members of the CDHP team conducted three seminars about
oral health and early prevention. "The classroom experience
has been an eye opener for students," says Nursing School
Director, Donna Kleister. "They didn't realize how many
young children were suffering the effects of oral disease."
Ms. Kleister's dream is to see nurses become effective community
change agents, and PRASAD CDHP intends to help her to realize
this dream. Read
more about the seminars.

Momentum
is building on PRASAD's Tour de Smile:
We launched the Tour
de Smile website.
Liz Hoffner, the coordinator of the Tour, drove the route from
New York to California. She is now based at CDHP's California
office in San Jose. You can contact her via phone: 408.937.4858
or by email: liz@tourdesmile.org.
An Event Worth
Smiling About
fundraiser was held in San Jose, California, on March 8, in
order to support the Tour.
Celebration planned for National Volunteer Week (April 27-May
3).
On Sunday, May 11, Dyan Campbell will speak to the Rocky Mountain
Friends of PRASAD in Colorado, and tell them about the Tour,
which will pass through Colorado in late July.
Riders are signing up, and their bios will soon be available
on the website. PRASAD's International Executive Director, Dermot
Hurly, has registered, and when asked why he is riding, he replied:
"I love the outdoors, I love helping people, and the Tour
is a great way to bring many people into PRASAD and to raise
awareness of what we do." Join us, and sign up to ride
today!

Simran
Sembhi arrived at The PRASAD Project headquarters in New York
in May 2002, and served as Website and Projects Editor with
the Constituency Education department. Originally from England,
Simran brought 10 years of publishing experience to PRASAD.
She helped to write copy for PRASAD's print materials, however,
Simran's main area of focus was as website editor. She created
and oversaw PRASAD's websites, both PRASAD's Tour
de Smile site and the redesigned 2003 PRASAD
website.
This month, Simran returns to London, where she will write her
masters thesis about PRASAD's Tuberculosis
program. Her concern for the high incidence rate of TB throughout
India has led her to explore whether PRASAD's model is one that
can be replicated in other states within the country, and around
the world. Read full
