At
Prasad Chikitsa's April eye camp, held from April 19-22,
one hundred patients received surgery. One of these patients
was Shevanti Namkula.
Shevanti, a woman in her late 50's
from Akloli, was, in effect, blind. She had previously
received cataract surgery on her left eye at another
facility in the village of Vasai. However, the surgeon
there did not put an artificial
intraocular lens (IOL) in her eye. And so, without
a pair of thick glasses, she was blind in her left eye.
In addition, a cataract was developing in Shevanti's
right eye, further debilitating her vision.

During the April eye camp, Shevanti
received two surgeries. First, an IOL was placed in
her left eye, and then the mature cataract was removed
from her right eye and replaced with an IOL. Now she
can see very well with both eyes.
When she was blind, Shevanti
was disheartened because she was not able to work. She
felt that she was not contributing to her family. Now,
thanks to the eye surgeries, she will be able to work
once again. Recently, her husband suffered a stroke,
and with her restored vision she will be able to take
good care of him.
